God at Work: Week 4 Commissioned

God at Work: Week 4 Commissioned
February 1 & 2 2020

Leader Note: Remember your goal isn’t to get through every question but to have a good discussion where everyone participates. Your number one job as a small group leader is making space for the Holy Spirit to work.

Let’s Break the Ice: Talk about a time when you wished you had taken a second look in the mirror.  Or  When you think about being a reflection of your greatest influences. In what ways are you a reflection today of your upbringing?

Getting Started:

  • Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time or that caught your attention, challenged you or confused you?

  • What have you been learning in your personal study and God time?

My StoryYears back we had good friends that would regularly remind their kids that whenever they stepped out of their house, they didn’t just represent themselves, but they also represented their family and they represented Jesus Christ.

  • What implications do you think go along with representing Christ well or not representing Him well? [Encourage your group to not just give a quick “Sunday-school answer to this question. What does this really look like in our everyday interactions with family, friends and co-workers etc…”]
  • While God desires for us to glorify Him through doing our work with excellence and our best efforts it’s very common for us as Christians to find that we have been placing our identity in our work rather that in Christ. What are some practical steps we can take to keep our identity grounded in Jesus?

Digging Deeper:

Read Ephesians 1:3-14 together. What do you hear in this letter from Paul to the Ephesian believers about their and also our identity as Christ followers?  Knowing that these verses aren’t just an inspirational speech but words of truth about you, does this change your view of who you are? If so, how?

Read 1 Corinthians 10:31 together. This verse doesn’t leave anything out. What do you tend to “leave off the list” that you believe God is reminding you to do for His glory?

Taking it Home: In light of this week’s teaching and study on bearing God’s image in the midst of our daily work, is there anything Jesus is calling you to change in your approach to your work or as you practice personal time with God so that you can be a better reflection of Him?

Prayer: How can we pray for each other as a group this week?
