Day 8: Boundaryless Generosity

READ

REFLECT

This week we will focus on several encounters certain individuals had with Jesus and we will see how He challenged their views of generosity. Today, we see Jesus’ response to a Pharisee’s question—”Who is my neighbor?” Jesus answers him by telling the parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus’ point was that everyone, including those whom this man despised (Jews and Samaritans despised one another), was his neighbor.

Jesus’ response is the same for us today. It is easy for us to love and be generous to those who are lovable and those who love us back. However, it can be very difficult for us to be generous to those whom we feel don’t deserve it. One way we can overcome these challenges is to ask God for insight into their lives so that we can see them as He sees them. Many times we have “blinders” on, and we forget Jesus is generous to us even though we don’t deserve it. How can we not be generous to others we think are undeserving, yet ask God for His generosity for ourselves?

RESPOND

Spend time in prayer, following the Upward, Inward, Outward, Upward format.

Upward: Who God is; What God has done, is doing, will do

Inward: Who you are; How you live

Outward: Intercession for others

(Spend time in prayer for those impacted by the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria.)

Today’s Prayer:

“Father, open my eyes so that I may see others and myself through your eyes. Help me see what your generosity looks like. Fill my heart with generous love so I can be generous to others. May my generosity know no boundaries and may it reflect your heart! Help Pathway continue to have no boundaries in our generosity toward one another and those who do not know you.”
