Day 4: Praying Against Fear
SCRIPTURE
“I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears… The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.”
– Psalm 34: 4, 7, NIV
“For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.”
– Isaiah 41:13
In our house, with two small children, it’s not uncommon to wake up in the middle of the night to a tap on the shoulder and a little voice saying, “Mommy, I had a bad dream. I’m scared.” Usually, all it takes is a snuggle and a kiss and they’re back to their own bed, sleeping soundly. The source of their little fears may be a dark shadow or a dream of a monster.
As an adult, our fears are different. We might fear what we see on the news, the state of our finances, a diagnosis, or a difficult parenting decision. There is a lot to fear. But time and time again, God reminds us in scripture to trust in Him, to walk with Him despite our fear, to call on Him in the midst of our fear.
PRAYER
Jesus, we know there is so much to be fearful of today. Our world is a scary place. But we also know you will always be with us if we call on you. You delight in comforting us, in pulling us close in times of fear and anxiety. You are not scared or surprised by any of the fears around us.
Today, we call on you to deliver us from our fears. We trust that you will surround us with your love and strength and deliver us from our fears. Thank you that your Word is full of reminders of what to do when we are afraid.
In your strong and comforting name, Amen.
