Day 5: God’s Generosity Gives Us a Future

READ

REFLECT

Have you ever watched Back to the Future? The plot of this movie centers around 17-year-old Marty McFly who is accidently transported into the past via a time-traveling DeLorean. While in the past, Marty discovers he can influence his present through acts he commits in the past. He comes to discover this ability is both good and bad. The movie is one of the more well-loved movies in American culture, most likely because it speaks to our desire to rectify past mistakes we’ve made that are still impacting our present lives. But, alas, we cannot travel back to the past in real life. Time only moves in one direction—forward.

However, there is good news! While we can’t change the past or all of its consequences, we can still trust God will somehow use them for a greater good. God wastes nothing in our lives. He is generous in His forgiveness and He is generous with our future. He never brings us out of Egypt without giving us a future, a good land. He is always giving us what we don’t deserve. That is how generous of a God He is!

RESPOND

Spend time in prayer, following the Upward, Inward, Outward, Upward format.

Upward: Who God is; What God has done, is doing, will do

Inward: Who you are; How you live

Outward: Intercession for others

(Spend time in prayer for those impacted by the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria.)

Today’s Prayer:

“Father, thank you for not allowing my past to set limits on what you can do in my life. Thank you for not being stingy in your giving me a future. Lord, I admit that my past can be a great enemy of the hope you want me to possess. I confess that to you so I can be aware of it and so I can be open to receiving your hope. Help all of us at Pathway to look to the future with great hope and anticipation of what you can and will do!”
