DAY 9: TRUSTING GOD IN THE WILDERNESS
READ
1 Samuel 21-23
REFLECT
Reading chapters 21-23 can make us feel exhausted with David as he flees from town to town. He knew God had chosen him to be the next king but also knew he was responsible to use his own mind and body to flee from Saul. He couldn’t just wait around and leave it up to God to rescue him. Although he trusted God, David had to participate in his own rescue. In Chapter 21, we see David in Nob where he takes Goliath’s sword for protection and the consecrated bread for provision. In chapter 22, David offers protection to Abiathar, one of the murdered priest’s sons. In chapter 23, David saves the town of Keilah from the Philistines, then barely escapes Saul’s grasp. In all three chapters, we see David both trusting God and utilizing his own mind and skillset to run away from Saul. Through it all, David knew it was God who ultimately protected him.
David’s example of trusting God in his wilderness can inspire us to do the same. Regardless of the circumstances we face, God is our ever-present help who guides and protects us. God cares more about our lives than we can ever care, so our trust in Him is a wise investment. He will never guide us to a place where he won’t protect us further.
RESPOND
Spend time in prayer, following the Upward, Inward, Outward, Upward format.
Upward: Who God is; What God has done, is doing, will do
Inward: Who you are; How you live
Outward: Intercession for others
Today’s Prayer:
Father, thank you for your presence in my life. As I seek to use the skills and mind you’ve given me, guide me to know Your will. Give me the grace and strength to follow Your will regardless of where it takes me.
Upward: Thanksgiving and Worship
