A Firm Foundation for the Coming Age

1 Timothy was written by the Apostle Paul to Timothy, a young Christian leader entrusted with overseeing the church in Ephesus. The city was known for its wealth due to its strategic location as a major port city, which facilitated trade and commerce.

“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” 1 Timothy 6:17-19 (NIV)

In this passage, note the commands given to wealthy believers about what to do and what not to do. These actions guide believers to live a life that emphasizes the eternal over the temporal. Take time and reflect on your own generosity as it relates to wealth and good deeds: How does it speak to a coming age beyond this one? How are you taking hold of true life?
