DAY 5: BE STILL
SCRIPTURE
“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.’
The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.”
– Psalm 46:10-11, NIV
“Be still.” It’s a command that goes against every fiber of my being when the world feels heavy and chaotic. It’s much more natural to seek answers, align myself with a cause, or simply busy myself in avoidance. There is a sense of control when I’m knee deep in Google searches and news articles. Information quickly becomes my security. But it’s only a matter of time before the answers don’t come and the noise overwhelms. Then the meaningless becomes my salve, filling my heart with anything that will drown out the unanswered. But detachment just leaves me running and exhausted. Both ways of coping find me spinning wheels that get me nowhere. It’s not that being well-informed or needing to unplug are bad things, but I am asked to sit in the tension of the unknown. That tension is uncomfortable. At times, it feels unnatural and it’s often unexpected, but that’s the way with Jesus. He brings hope to the hopeless and peace where it makes no sense.
So when the world gets loud and I’m tempted to try and make sense of it all, I’m going to pause before the Father, cling to the truth of His word, and let the tension serve as a reminder that He can hold it all. To be still before the God who knows all things. To bring pain into His presence. To see holiness within the heavy. To replace my worry with worship. To lay down my phone and lift up my eyes. To trust the One who holds it all together will be faithful to everything He has promised.
PRAYER
God there is no one like you. The tension of the hard and the holy does not intimidate you. You see beyond the temporary to the eternal. Give me eyes to see your light on the darkest of days. When the world gets loud and my heart feels heavy, I will turn to you. Your promises are secure and your ways are higher. Still my heart and remind me of your truth when my soul is unsettled. I want to live so full of your peace that it overflows into the world around me. You are a good and trustworthy God. Amen
