DAY 2: GOD’S PRESENCE THAT PROVIDES
READ
Exodus 16; Psalm 37:23-26
REFLECT
One month after experiencing God’s miraculous work during their departure from Egypt, the Israelites began to grumble and regret they had left because they had nothing to eat. Yet, the same God who demonstrated His presence that delivered them from Egypt would show them He is also a God whose presence provides for them. However, His provision involved faith. God did not provide manna that would last all week or month. He provided it daily. The Israelites had to trust God one day at a time.
Unlike the Israelites, we may not know what’s it like to depend daily for food and not know what the next day will hold. Today, we often go to Sam’s Club or Costco to stock up on food for several weeks. We open our pantry or refrigerator door and there is food right in front of us. Therefore, we can take the daily necessities of life for granted and forget that the God who is near is the God who also provides. He wants us to trust Him for the basic necessities of life and not spend time worrying about that which He has already promised to give us. Instead, He wants us to focus our strength and minds on knowing Him and advancing His kingdom.
RESPOND
Spend time in prayer, following the Upward, Inward, Outward, Upward format.
Upward: Who God is; What God has done, is doing, will do
Inward: Who you are; How you live
Outward: Intercession for others
Today’s Prayer:
My Provider, forgive me for worrying about what you’ve already promised to give me. Remind me that if you took care of my greatest need (my eternal salvation) you will also take care of my lesser needs. Show me how your presence is what I ultimately need more than anything else in this world. Teach me contentment. Teach me that you are ultimately enough.
Upward: Thanksgiving and Worship
