Day 7: How Will They Hear?
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”–Romans 10:13-15

Every year, the Pathway youth come to Inasmuch for their mission trip, Week of Hope. Three years ago, a young man named Alex came to IAM for the first time. He met with clients, heard their stories, shared Jesus, and prayed for them. He became a regular and was so loved by all of us and our clients! He would also bring his friends and family to serve at IAM.
One Friday morning in the spring of his senior year, he had a day off from school. Instead of sleeping in, he got up to come to IAM to serve. The Sunday before he had heard a sermon about listening to the Holy Spirit and stepping out in faith to share Jesus. The day he came to IAM, we had nobody to work in the food pantry, so Alex said he would do it. A young woman named Katie, came to IAM for the first time. Katie had struggled with all kinds of issues in her life. She was not much older than Alex. She was in a recovery house in Fort Wayne. She came downstairs with a volunteer and was standing outside our food pantry waiting on her food. Alex heard the Holy Spirit, and he stepped out in faith and asked this woman if he could pray for her. She said yes so Alex sat down next to her and began to pray. She collected her food and left.
A few days later, I saw Katie; she grabbed my hands and asked if I knew that Alex had prayed for her. She said for the first time in her life she saw who God was; She said, “He is not an angry old man who hates me and is punishing me. He loves me. I felt it when Alex prayed.” Alex stepped out in faith and was a goer, and in an instant changed a woman’s life and heart. He said yes.
Prayer
Oh Lord Jesus, help all of us to have the sensitivity of Alex to hear the Holy Spirit when He says go, to not be afraid to share your Love and who you are. Help us to never back away because we are not trained or prepared, but just be ready at any moment, no matter where we are. Amen.
