Day 4: Power to Witness
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. – Acts 1:8
God knows that in order for us to live lives of eternal significance, particularly in our current broken world, we need a comforter, and helper, in the form of the Holy Spirit.
And yet, scripture also shows us that, upon receiving the anointing of the Holy Spirit, Jesus was immediately thereafter led into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. In a similar fashion, shortly after Pentecost the Apostles were arrested, imprisoned, and beaten.
So, while the Holy Spirit is our comforter, that does not mean He always leads us into comfortable places. In fact, it is precisely because we have direct and eternal access to the Holy Spirit that God will often call us out of our comfort zones.
For many of us, spaces that are often most uncomfortable are those where we are called to testify to others about the life change that Jesus has brought forth in our own lives.
Be encouraged, dear friend. The same Holy Spirit that is spoken of in Genesis 1:2 as being present from the very beginning, is the same Holy Spirit that was present at the baptism of Jesus and the outset of his ministry, which is the same Holy Spirit that was present at Pentecost and the commencement of the Apostles ministry.
So, we are never alone; and through the person of the Holy Spirit, we have access to a power that is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. A power that is global yet personal. A power that is both life giving and life altering. A power that intercedes on our behalf, in our homes, our cities, our country and our world. As we testify to God’s goodness, let us be reminded that greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, as we go about our daily lives in this world that often seems so far from You, remind us of the power we have in the Holy Spirit to rightfully and courageously proclaim, to anyone that we may encounter, that all who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved. Give us the words and the courage to boldly proclaim the good news of the gospel, of which we are all witnesses. Amen.
