HOW DO I GET STARTED?
Tomorrow we begin 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. If you’ve never fasted before or you’re still not sure what these 21 Days should look like for you, don’t overcomplicate it. Take some time today to pray and prepare.
1. DECIDE WHAT YOU WILL FAST.
Traditionally, fasting involves food. You might choose to fast from a particular food, one meal a day, or all food for a set period of time. You also might choose to step away from something else that regularly gets your time or attention—social media, streaming, games, shopping, or another habit.
Choose something that will create meaningful space in your life and regularly remind you to turn your attention toward God.
2. DECIDE WHAT YOU WILL DO WITH THE SPACE.
Giving up something is only part of fasting. Think about how you’ll intentionally use the time or attention you’re creating. Maybe you’ll pray during the lunch hour you normally spend eating, begin your morning with Scripture instead of your phone, or turn off the TV at night and spend some of that time with God.
3. MAKE IT SPECIFIC.
Rather than a vague “I’m going to spend less time on social media”, decide what that actually means. Delete the app for 21 days. Choose specific meals to fast. Decide when you'll pray or read each day's devotional.
A simple plan makes it easier to follow through when tomorrow comes.
4. REMEMBER THE PURPOSE.
This isn't about choosing the hardest fast or completing 21 Days perfectly. The goal is not the fast itself. The goal is to seek God. If you miss a day or your plan needs to change, just keep going.
BEFORE TOMORROW: Decide what you’ll set aside, how you’ll use the space it creates, and when you’ll make time each day to seek God.
