Thrive Thought: When the Honeymoon Ends… and the Budget Begins

THRIVE THOUGHT
When the Honeymoon Ends… and the Budget Begins

Newlyweds are the most fun people to watch because they are fully caught up in their own world. I remember feeling oblivious to almost everything else because I was excited to explore this new life with someone I deeply loved.

We know this perspective continues until the physical and metaphorical honeymoons come to an end, and we hope the metaphorical honeymoon lasts longer than the actual one!

For me, I remember realizing our metaphorical honeymoon ended around the time we had a disagreement about money, spending, and saving. For my wife and me, there was tension about these topics, and I am the first to admit I came into our marriage with little knowledge of money.

I have heard my wife share that she thought I handled money wisely when we were dating. It turns out I was just a poor college student—I did not have money to mess up with. That changed after our wedding.

Our pivotal moment came when we chose to create a budget, live on less than we made as a couple, and commit to Proverbs 21:5.

Proverbs 21:5 says, "Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.” (NLT)

Early in our marriage, we tried many hasty shortcuts with our finances—and all of them failed us. When we agreed to pursue good planning and worked hard at it, we began to see small wins. Over time, those small wins grew into healthy habits that helped foster a healthy marriage.

On Saturday, May 30 during the 5pm service, Thrive Financial Ministry is hosting a Newly Married Budgeting Seminar just for couples married five years or less.

We want Pathway marriages to be healthy and marked by good planning and shared commitment.
